How to Master Full-Sentence & Passage Dictation Practice at Home
Move beyond single word lists with spoken sentence dictation that checks spelling, capital letters, and punctuation automatically.
Quick Guide: Full-sentence dictation in Spelling Boost allows children to practice complete sentences and reading passages rather than isolated single words. Tap Create (+), select Text Practice, and type or paste a story paragraph or assignment. The app dictates the text with flexible audio controls (play full passage or repeat sentence-by-sentence) while automatically evaluating spelling, capital letters, full stops, commas, and spacing.
Why Single-Word Practice Isn’t Always Enough
Many children spell words correctly in isolated single-word tests, but struggle to apply those same words when writing full sentences in class. Single-word practice only focuses on spelling letters in isolation. In real classroom writing, a child must manage spelling, capital letters, punctuation, and sentence meaning all at once.
Practicing full-sentence dictation builds real writing fluency, helping children apply accurate spelling, capitalization, and punctuation naturally whenever they write.

Step-by-Step Guide: Setting Up Text Dictation
Step 1: Open Text Practice Creation
Tap the Create (+) button on the home screen and choose Text Practice. This mode is designed specifically for full sentences, story paragraphs, and assigned reading passages.
Step 2: Enter Your Reading Passage
Give your session a name (e.g. “Science Unit 3 Dictation” or “Weekly Story Paragraph”). Type or paste an assigned reading paragraph or textbook passage into the text area.
Step 3: Choose Spoken Voice & Set a Test Date
Select your preferred spoken voice (such as UK English, US English, Australian, or another supported language). You can also select an optional Test Date to track upcoming dictation tests and receive gentle daily practice notifications.
Step 4: Start Practice & Complete Guided Corrections
Press Start Practice. Your child listens to the spoken audio dictation using flexible controls—choosing to listen to the Full Passage or repeat sentence-by-sentence as they type their response. When finished, the app instantly checks their work for correct spelling, capital letters, full stops, commas, and spacing. If any mistakes were made, Spelling Boost enters Guided Corrections mode, prompting your child to re-type only the specific sentences with errors until they achieve 100% accuracy.
